And Then the World Changed: First Insights on How the Pandemic Affected Remittances in Northern Central America

Abstract

Both migration and remittances in the countries of North Central America (NCA) have been affected by the health and economic shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. […] It was widely predicted at the beginning of the pandemic that the related restrictions and widespread economic contraction would lead to a sharp decline in remittances if they resulted in earnings reductions for migrants. At the same time, the pandemic raised serious concerns about rising food insecurity among recipient households brought about by falling household resources. This chapter provides an early assessment of the changes wrought by the pandemic on migration and remittances in the NCA region.
