Remittances and their Effects on Poverty and Inequality

The sheer magnitude of remittance flows to the three countries in Northern Central America (NCA) would suggest that they must play a significant role in reducing poverty. However, the links between migration, remittances, and poverty and inequality are complex, making it difficult to determine the effects a priori. […] In this chapter, we explore the evolution of the relationships between migration, remittances, and poverty and inequality in the NCA countries, using data from each country’s household survey, and generate two counterfactual scenarios for four different points in time spanning 20 years to estimate the impact of remittances on poverty.
